Let me start with saying, how much I was looking forward to this film! I had heard it was a worthy legendary sequel compared to some previous films. I also am aware, that as a 35 year old male, I am not the target demo.
With that said, I came out a little disappointed and had moments in the film I thought "what the heck am I watching?"
The cast is all FANTASTIC! Our two new, young leads (Julia Butters & Sophia Hammons) do a great job playing rival future step siblings and embodying the adult characters when the switch happens. Jamie Lee Curtis may be having the most fun I have ever seen an actor in a role. Lindsay Lohan is in top form. Our hottie guys, Chad Michael Murray & Manny Jacinto are both easy on the eyes, and easy to see why anyone would fall in love with them. Sidenote: Manny Jacinto's short dance scene definitely led to me having a moment of forgetting where I was.
There are a few moments I genuinely laughed out loud, and I even started to tear up in the 3rd act. But, there really was a lot missing. Elements of it felt like I was watching an SNL spoof, or an filmed opening of an Awards show. For some reason, when people swap bodies they don't know how to act human? And it's a little frustrating.
Much like the recent Happy Gilmore 2, this film was made for the fans of the original (which I love, and rewatched before going in and it still holds up), with so many callbacks and characters from the original.
Am I happy I saw it? Yes. Will I ever rewatch this? I'll probably stick to the original film.
